I am a huge fan of the DIY spa treatments and procedures. Now granted I don’t plan on giving myself injections but laser hair removal has been the most extreme at home treatment I have ever done. When I found out I would be able to do it at home, why would I pay $200 a session for it? The device I have is the COSBEAUTY IPL Permanent Hair Removal System, which is cleared by the FDA and is only $250. Now you are probably unaware that IPL is not actually a laser, but they both remove hair using the same principle. That principle being, light energy that is absorbed by areas of high pigment, such as hairs. The light heats the area up to the point of follicle damage, which slows hair growth and even prevents it completely. The main difference between IPL and laser hair removal devices is the light source.
IPL, Intense Pulsed Light, uses a source of broad-spectrum, visible light. The light energy is absorbed and then transfers into heat energy, which warms the hair and damages the follicle. Laser hair removal is just a more concentrated and controlled light energy. It travels deeper down into the pore, which can give a more specific area treatment. IPL tends to be quicker because you can cover more surface area and is much cheaper, but you need more sessions to achieve your ideal results.
Neither laser hair removal or IPL will give immediate results. The hairs will drop out as they die over the next few weeks and those which have not been affected (due to their stage of growth cycle during the treatment), will need another session. You are able to shave before and after your treatment, but the hairs will grow back thinner and less course, until they eventually stop growing back. It takes between 1 and 10 treatments to achieve permanent hair loss. You may need to occasionally touch up certain areas every few months to a year, but overall the results will be lasting.
My experience with my IPL device has been extremely successful! It took me a second to figure out how to turn it on; you need to press the power button and then hold the opposite end up sensor to your skin for it to turn on. The hair under my armpits has stopped growing almost completely. My legs take a long time and I get lazy and over it after one leg, so I haven’t devoted too much time to them. Now my v-jay has taken much longer to see results because the hair is much thicker in the bikini area. (TMI!) I have a landing strip so I have worked around it and I am starting to see spots where the hair has not returned, but this area will still take more time to completely stunt growth. As far as pain goes, I now use it on the highest level (5) and the only time I feel any pain, is on my intimate area. I typically give myself a treatment once a week; sometimes more, sometimes less. I plan on continuing treatments until the hair stops growing and I would say I am pretty close to that point (I just need to stop being lazy and do my legs). I recommend purchasing this device if you have ever considered laser hair removal, constantly have to shave or get bad ingrown hairs. For $250, there is no reason not to!
