Okay so I am going through the worst skin moment I have had in awhile. I NEVER break out or have pimples and all of the sudden my entire forehead looks like a Forever 21 dot patterned sundress…hideous. I have always been a person who took care of my skin, mostly for anti-aging but like I said, other than the monthly hormonal pimple or two on my chin, I haven’t had any issues. I started to do my research because this forehead issue, wasn’t going to work for me. This further research brought me conclusively to face mapping to try to solve my issues. I have heard of face mapping and most people have a basic understanding (aka the “T-Zone”). Learning as much as I could about each area of the face to try to solve my problems and so far, I have been clearing my face up overall. Not even just curing acne, learning more about face mapping and what internal functions effect the face, can help clear up quite a few issues. Discloser I am not a professional in skin care, I just have good skin and know what I do to care for it so I am sharing that with you. If you have any serious acne issues, always go to a dermatologist. So let’s dive into it!
Cause: Obviously this was my primary focus and what I came across, was kind of disturbing because I am not a super unhealthy person. Breakouts in this area may mean your diet is the issue. This means that something you are eating is disturbing your digestive system and bladder. Now I was looking back into my previous diet prior to the breakout, the only thing the stood out to me was I had consumed a large amount of (cheap) beer the previous weekend, which I normally don’t drink much of. One of the main ingredients is yeast which f**ks up your insides and creates dermatitis (which I will get further into in a minute). I only continued to make the forehead worse because I was popping pimples (with a tool) which kept spreading more bacteria…I am a face picker so there was no stopping me. Also putting chemicals like makeup and certain face treatment or cleansers also continue to irritate the forehead. Along with that, over exfoliating your forehead can cause irritation. Another reason for forehead pimples is dandruff and greasy scalp. I don’t have an issue with dandruff but like every girl in this world, I love to push it to the limit for how many days I can go without washing my hair. But this wasn’t the case for my breakout because anytime that affected me in the past, it was a pimple much closer to my hair line. And last but not least, stress is the main factor in my life that most people told me had to have been my issue for a forehead breakout. Stress produces more oil (sebum) which clogs hair follicles and creates acne. Awesome!
Solution: Well when I first found out it may be my digestive system due to a yeast imbalance I immediately researched how to clear fungal acne (which I will get to in a minute I promise) and tried that route but saw some but little improvement. I detoxed for two days to make sure my diet wasn’t the problem and thought my skin did improve a bit so I am thinking that weekend of beer must have reacted poorly along with my stress. I stopped exfoliating and tried to stop popping pimples. Didn’t put anything on my face as far as makeup goes (which I don’t wear anyways). I also put tons of Tea Tree Oil on my forehead because it is a miracle substance that cures many issues (post on Tea Tree Oil coming soon). It destroys bacteria and regulates different levels. All of this along with staying as hydrated as possible, eating well and my light therapy mask (stay tuned) have now cleared my face. It took about a week or two of experimenting to find out what the issue was and then a week or so for it to clear up once I figured out what wasn’t working.
In Between Your Eyes and Eyebrows
Cause: I also had about three small pimples in this area during my breakout so once I put all my pieces together everything made complete sense. This area is affected by the liver. So a heavy weekend of drinking alcohol is a huge factor in breakouts in this area. Also a dairy plays a part in pimples in this zone. Any sort of acne, redness, flakiness or excess oil between the brows can all relate back to your liver.
Solution: If you keep getting pimples in this spot, cutting back alcohol might be your answer (which sucks). I don’t drink a ton anymore so this was just a random occurrence that my body endured of cheap beer and it probably won’t happen anytime soon. I also take my milk thistle which I doubled up on to make sure I cleared that area up. As for cutting dairy, I truly only consume cheese and not even in large amounts. But I did eat a bit of ice cream around this time which I am wondering if it made things worse. I honestly looked at every single behavioral change I could to solve the problem. But if you are a big dairy eater, you might have seen I don’t approve but if you need to clear up your skin, try cutting it and seeing if it makes a difference. Also avoid late night eating because this can also increase oils and breakouts in this area because the liver is trying to work while you’re sleeping to process toxins and waste from the food.
Ears and Around Your Eyes
Cause: Now we are getting a bit out of the acne and more into face problems overall. If your ears are inflamed (aka hot or swollen) it can be due to dehydration and issues with your kidneys. The same thing applies to dark circles under your yes.
Solution: Cutting soda, caffeine and alcohol should be your first move when attempting to fix your ears and the dark circles around your eyes. These things dehydrate your body. Increasing your water intake is an obvious must for all face issues but especially this issue. And the most common solution for dark eyes is catching up on your R.E.M. cycle and hitting the hay. Sleep is so annoying because it affects so many things in your body and if you don’t get enough of it, everything is f**ked up.
Cause: Increased breakouts and broken capillaries in these areas are all related to the respiratory system. If you have allergies, you may also experience outbreaks in this area as well. Acne in the lower part of your cheeks, closer to your mouth, may suggest dental problems and infections like gingivitis. Any sort of redness, inflammation and irritation in this area can be related to asthma, lack of exercise (and deep breathing aka not breathing well) and some air pollution.
Solution: Well for starters, quit smoking (for obvious reasons). I had a boss that had broken capillaries all over her cheeks and she was very overweight and a smoker, and to be honest, it disturbed me so I can’t imagine having that issue. Breathe clean air and try to avoid pollution or allergy triggers. Putting live houseplants in your house are a great way to get some clean air into your home (just remember to care for them). Take care of your teeth and gums. I brush my teeth multiple times a day and floss and use a gum health mouthwash; it is important to take care of your dental hygiene to avoid any serious infections which could break you out. Make sure you are washing your face for any sort of acne causing bacteria. Think about all of the stuff that touches your cheeks, your phone, pillowcases, hands…make sure you are washing that sh*t off (and cleaning your pillowcases every other week or so).
Chin and Around Mouth
Cause: Blackheads, whiteheads and small pimples that come to a head in this area especially around the mouth, are due to high stress and hormonal changes. It sucks that around my period without fail I break out in this area due to the increase of estrogen. The center of the chin is known to be affected by the digestive system and the need for fiber in the diet.
Solution: Being on the pill is a way to control hormonal acne (but I am scared to play experimental games to solve my few pimples if my pills are fine everywhere else). Anti-androgen drugs decrease the male hormone androgen which interferes with hair follicles that regulates skin cells. Retinoids are typically topical in creams, gels and lotions are all known as the most effective way to keep your skin consistently clear. Again, Tea Tree Oil is going to relieve your acne and is an all-natural solution. With hormone acne it is hard to prevent because it is due to your hormone levels so if it becomes a problem, you should see a doctor!
Yeast Fungal Acne
Yeah this is freaking gross but it is how our bodies function so we need to figure it out. We all have a certain amount of yeast/fungi in our bodies and skin but at times that yeast in have an imbalance and f**k everything up. Your diet is the main culprit for any sort of change in yeast. Side note so are antibiotics so if you have to take them for a sickness, ask your doctor for a yeast pill because I would always get a yeast infection when I took them because it messed with the levels. Our gut is very important to care for not only because of your weight, but it makes everything function. Now any of acne or breakouts can actually be related to yeast so it wouldn’t hurt to look into this if nothing else is working. I read online and watched a few YouTube videos and saw people using anti-fungal cream. So I went to Rite Aid with my mom and bought anti-jock itch wash (don’t laugh jock itch is a yeast infection). I went for the wash to see if that helped instead of piling more cream and product on my face. Yeast overgrow can be going on with anyone and can even go unnoticed if the problems are mild. I am telling you to give it a try and have some anti-fungal wash and cream handy for the future. Also start taking probiotics if you don’t already. I will be honest I was never truly concerned about taking probiotics but ever since my forehead breakout, I have become more aware of my body and decided to start taking them to help regulate my yeast levels. Yeast overgrowth also destroys collagen so you look aged and not as plump so getting checked if your yeast is messed up can help you look even younger.
Light Therapy Mask
You might have heard all about light therapy or have never heard of it at all, but the real question is does it actually work. I have known about it for awhile and planned on getting it in the future but advances in technology have made this available at our fingertips. I purchased the Neutrogena Light Therapy Mask because my forehead was pissing me the f**k off. What the mask does is use blue light which is clinically proven to kill acne bacteria and eliminates any bacteria that may cause inflammation. I have used it three times and my skin already looks better. It is UV free so it isn’t damaging on your face. It was less than $30 on Amazon and I honestly think it was worth trying out. As time goes on I will continue to use it and see if it actually is responsible for clearing skin. But light therapy is proven and this is honestly the cheapest way to get it. You also may have seen The Skinny Confidential using it.
Basic Skin Care
I am following this post with my preserving skin routine and anti-aging but I will discuss what my typical routine on a daily basis. I will wash my face with a cleanser. Sometimes in the shower I will use a charcoal scrub but I try not to use that often because it dries out the face. I then stopped using toner at the moment because it has been drying out my face even more so I go straight for a serum. I will put on any restoring lotions or creams for any acne. I then use my anti-aging cremés and finally my Dior moisturizer because I have dry skin. Now you may be thinking that sounds like too much stuff so that is why I was breaking out but I just switched back to this routine which was my original routine in college when I had no problems at all. Before I used toners, I washed my face MORE and I didn’t use my Dior moisturizer that I have been using since high school. I was drying out and irritating my skin. I assumed that I needed to wash my face more because I was trying to get even more into skin care and it just wasn’t for me. I even put moisturizer on my dirt face if it is extremely dry. People may think this clogs my pores but honestly this has worked for me and my face has been clear. I also use my rose water facial spray randomly throughout the day. Finding the right products for your face sucks and takes time but it is extremely important for maintaining youth and keeping your skin clear. Stay tuned to my anti-aging skin care post coming soon and let me know if you have any awesome tricks of your own for acne!
